The chapters we are reading are so full of interesting and challenging insights! I am excited to “hear” some of your thoughts and reflections.

I really enjoyed chapter 1 on Likeness. It challenged me to reconsider what I define “being made in the image of God” to really mean. What an awesome privilege!
“…we are made in the image of God. For us, the shell of skin and muscle and bones serves as a vessel. A repository for His image. We can comprehend and even convey something of the Creator. Our cellular construction of proteins arranged by DNA can become temples of the Holy Spirit.” (p.22).
I have never questioned the fact that we as humans are made in the image of God, but I guess that I have never stopped to think about the layers and layers of application that has for me in my life. I would be curious to hear what any of you think about the discussion the book gives about “image bearing” being a spiritual one, and not physical. There are some interesting thoughts there!

Chapter 2 had thought provoking concepts about being “mirrors” to those around us. I want to be someone who reflects tha best in others… who reflects that we are made in the image of God. Remember the Air Force Pilot who’s face was grossly disfigured in the war? He said that he looked to his wife as she reflected who he was despite his disfigurement and physical appearance.
“Each of us has the potential to summon up in the people we meet the image of God… or instead we can ignore or squelch that image and judge only on the basis of external appearance. I pray that when I see a person, I will see the image of God inside, and ultimate worth, not just the cultural “image” that we all strive to attain” (p.33).
Oh, how far short I fall in being someone who looks past external things. It is easy to judge people based on my pride and shallow perspective. How thankful I am that God made me in His image and has given such deep grace! May I extend that to those around me!

Janell I totally agree! I want to be a person who looks past external things, a person who mirrors the true heart and worth of individuals!
You also mentioned wanting to know our thoughts about “spiritual image bearing” of God. I believe we are made in the image of God, but it is a spiritual image. As human beings are are imperfect in our nature because God gave us free will and choice to live as we want. So in order to bear the image of God, we must choose to daily live for him. It can be so hard sometimes! But it is the only way in which to show the image of God to others.
